Local sources in Badakhshan province confirm to Khaama Press that the World Health Organization has withdrawn its support from the 60-bed maternity hospital in Fayzabad, resulting in its closure.

Engineer Zabihullah Amir, head of information and culture in Badakhshan province, stated on Monday to Khaama Press that the hospital has been unable to operate for a week and is officially closed.

Earlier, local media reported, based on statements from hospital officials, that over 70 staff members, including several specialists, have been unemployed due to the hospital’s closure.

According to local media reports, with the closure of this hospital, only one medical treatment center remains operational within the government hospital facilities in this province.

Meanwhile, alongside the unemployment crisis, the increase in maternal mortality rates has sparked widespread concerns in Afghanistan.

Last year, the Emergency Organization reported that “Afghanistan has the highest maternal mortality rate globally.” According to this report, every two hours, a woman loses her life during childbirth or pregnancy in Afghanistan.

The closure of essential medical facilities like the Fayzabad Maternal Hospital exacerbates the challenges faced by Afghan women in accessing critical maternal healthcare services.
