UEFA Euro 2024 has been dominating the sports headlines since the tournament in Germany kicked off in the middle of June. Without club football in play, fans of the world’s most popular sport have naturally gravitated to this year’s slate of international tournaments, which includes the Copa América over in the United States.

Even though the Republic of Ireland didn’t make the cut, Irish fans have been switching on in droves to watch RTÉ’s coverage of Euro 2024. In fact, the viewing figures have not only shown a big uptick for the broadcaster when compared to previous seasons, but also, RTÉ Player has earned record-breaking viewership, per mediasales.rte.ie.

Among the highlight figures of the Group Stage alone were an average audience on live TV of 267,800, 336,400, and 375,900 for Denmark vs England, Spain vs Italy, and the Netherlands vs France, respectively. As for streaming, each earned over 160,000 in Ireland. For a country that’s not participating, they’re rather impressive figures.

Irish fans would have every reason to skip on Euro 2024. After all, the nation was dealt a particularly cruel hand in qualifying. Sure, Gibraltar offered six easy points, but Greece were enjoying a resurgence, and they were joined by both France and the Netherlands! It made for a near impossible task to try to qualify for the summer games.

So, everyone expected the betting over the summer to flip from the football to the casino. As the viewing figures above detail, the Irish have gravitated towards clashes between European heavyweights, as well as what was expected to be the toughest Group Stage game for their neighbours, England. This does hold some pre-tournament weight with a couple of things pointing to a subtle Irish following for the English.

In a poll reported by dublinlive.ie, England ranked as the top team that Irish football fans will be supporting Germany, winning 12 per cent of the 1,000-person survey. Way back of England was Scotland with just a seven per cent share, which put them behind France, Spain, and Portugal.

Perhaps another driver of this Irish following is that one of their own is technically in attendance. A fan-favourite for always being a class act, Declan Rice was capped for Ireland before his ascendency in the Premier League and into a guaranteed starting XI spot for England.

Whatever the true reason is, the lack of qualifying hasn’t stopped Ireland’s avid football fans from tuning in to watch the continent’s biggest tournament this summer!
