Jay Shah To Contest ICC Chairman Elections? BCCI Secretary Keen To Make Changes At International Cricket Council: Report

Under the guidance of Jay Shah, Indian cricket has transformed for the good.

New Delhi: Jay Shah might leave his post of honorary secretary at the BCCI to contest elections for International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman elections, scheduled to take place in November later this year, according to reports. The ICC is currently headed by incumbent Greg Barclay for four years now and is eligible for another term. But if Shah decides to throw in his hat in the elections, he is going to be elected unopposed. Should Shah win the election, he will become the youngest ICC chairman.

The next ICC annual conference is in Colombo later this month and if reports are to go by, the dates of election for the next chairman could be discussed in the meeting. However, there hasn’t been any comment from Shah on this matter. According to reports, Shah wants to bring in some changes in the way how ICC functions, especially after recent controversies over the organization of the T20 World Cup 2024 that took place in USA and West Indies.

Meanwhile, the ICC too has reportedly amended its constitution as far as the tenure of the chairman is concerned. A newly-elected chairman can stay for three years as opposed to two earlier. He can be re-elected only once unlike twice before. Shah has been associated with cricket administration since 2009. He had served as the secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association before joining BCCI in 2015. His appointment for the post of BCCI secretary came in 2019.

After India won the T20 World Cup 2024, Shah had announced a price money of Rs 125 crore for the players and support staff. “I am pleased to announce prize money of INR 125 Crores for Team India for winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The team has showcased exceptional talent, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to all the players, coaches, and support staff for this outstanding achievement!”
