CNN host puts Congressman on the spot over why Black Democrats aren't abandoning Biden

Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) is among the lawmakers asking for President Joe Biden to step out of the 2024 race. Speaking to CNN on Monday, he was pressed on why Black voters aren't abandoning Biden.

CNN's John Berman mentioned Biden's interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, and at the same time as the interview with Quigley, Biden called into MSNBC, where he attacked party "elites" and "millionaire" donors.

Quigley said that his opinion doesn't matter and that it's clear that the voters are the ones with the problem. What his concern appears to be is that Biden doesn't have the coattails necessary to take back Congress in districts where he won previously in 2020.

"All these congressional races are not getting better, so we're in a horrible situation until that gets resolved," Quigley said.

"So, there have been a number of members, including you, who have come forward and asked the president to step aside," Berman said. "One group that has not yet come forward to push him out or are Black Democratic leaders, particularly the Black Caucus in the House of Representatives here. Why do you think they are still standing?"

Quigley meandered around, searching for a response. All he could come up with was that Black leaders wanted to "have a conversation" and that members weren't in Washington last week due to the holiday.

"Again, there's a lot of processing that has to take place," he continued. "And frankly, a lot of the polling, it will continue to come out, I think, will influence people's decisions. So, I can't read the minds of my friends and the Black Caucus, but I suspect they're going to be doing the same thing all the other members are ... taking time to deliberate and talk and discuss this matter again."

Conservative CNN commentator and SiriusXM host Shermichael Singleton experienced a backlash when he called for Biden to step.

"I said, 'I think he should step down and Vice President [Kamala] Harris should carry forward," Singleton said. "They did not want to hear it."

Quigley is among at least eight Democrats in Congress who have come forward to ask Biden to step down from the 2024 ticket.

In a letter to Congress on Monday, Biden noted his overwhelming win in the 2024 Democratic presidential primary and then rhetorically asked, "Do we now just say this process doesn't matter? That the voters don't have a say? I decline to do that."

Biden maintains he will not step down.
