A Thousand Moons is an exhibition of minimalist furniture created by Copenhagen-based designer Salem Charabi, presented during 3daysofdesign. Charabi and his team of skilled cabinet-makers blend local materials with techniques discovered from around the world, creating furniture that marries the familiar with the elusive. Charabi’s approach is rooted in a poetic vision, where each piece is a response to a sense of longing and a quest for meaning. This creative process results in furniture that not only utilizes nearby resources but also incorporates influences that transcend time and place. The exhibition showcased 38 pieces of furniture developed over two years for a single-commission private residence in California, which included nightstands with fabric shelves, a large ochre-painted cabinet, a sofa with a woven maple back, and a sphinx-like chaise lounge.

Each piece stood on its respective shipping crate, marking its final moments in the workshop before being shipped across the Atlantic to its new home. Charabi was given a unique challenge: to create furniture exclusively for this residence. This directive led to two years of intensive research, exploration, and creation. The collection reflected on the question, “How does one create a home?” Drawing from personal memories and historical references, each piece offered a deeply intimate response to this question. The furniture pieces, while individually distinct, shared common traits, much like members of a family. Unifying elements and an undeniable connection binding them together.
