'DEI vice president': GOP Rep. Chip Roy repeats racist trope about Kamala Harris

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) suggested Vice President Kamala Harris was not suited for her job and that she only received it due to her ethnicity.

During a Monday interview on Fox Business, Roy told host David Asman that President Joe Biden wasn't up for the role of commander-in-chief after his poor debate performance.

"It's about the state of the president of the United States, the state of the commander in chief, the ability of the commander in chief to make the decisions necessary to carry out the powers and the duties of the office which he holds," Roy said. "He has the nuclear codes. We are engaged in all sorts of conflicts around the world, directly or indirectly. He's making tough and difficult decisions every day."

The Texas Republican argued Democrats wanted "president by committee" instead of Biden's leadership.

"That's unconstitutional," he declared.

Asman wondered if Democrats would sign on to Roy's effort to push members of Biden's cabinet to use the 25th Amendment to remove him.

"At the end of the day, I don't think they'll go there," Roy admitted. "I don't think they can. They're in a box."

"They are in a box where they've got to choose between a mentally incompetent president and a DEI vice president, and they know that they're going to be facing a problem either way," he added.

Conservatives have amplified their rhetoric in recent days by calling Harris a "DEI hire." The term DEI — or diversity, equity, and inclusion — is an effort to embrace all racial, sexual, gender, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

On Sunday, former aide to Donald Trump John Ullyot was called out on Newsmax for using the term "DEI hire" to refer to Harris.

"You shouldn't talk like that," columnist Ellis Henican told Ullyot. "It makes you sound like a racist. Don't talk like that."
