GOP platform softens same-sex marriage and abortion stances as Trump boasts of 'greatness'

The Republican Party platform made history when it was passed Monday and former President Donald Trump praised the committee members who ushered in his demands.

"The 2024 GOP Platform to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN was overwhelmingly approved by the Rules Committee - Thank you to Chairwoman Marsha Blackburn and Vice Chair Michael Waltz for their tireless work to PUT AMERICA FIRST. Ours is a forward-looking Agenda with strong promises that we will accomplish very quickly when we win the White House and Republican Majorities in the House and Senate," posted Trump on Truth Social.

For the first time in over 40 years, the Republican Party killed its support for a federal ban on abortion — and it went further, declaring the GOP would support in vitro fertilization, which was outlawed in Alabama by Republican lawmakers and judges.

"To make clear our commitment, we offer to the American People our plan to restore our Country to Greatness - It will be approved next week at the GOP Convention," Trump continued. "The Forgotten Men and Women of this Country will be forgotten no longer. MAGA!"

The right-leaning Federalist headlined the platform issue, saying, "Top GOPers' surrender on abortion leaves their pro-life voters, women, and babies out to dry."

The new platform also strips language condemning a Supreme Court ruling that allowed same-sex couples to marry.

"Republicans will promote a culture that values the sanctity of marriage, the blessings of childhood, and the foundational role of families, and supports working parents. We will end policies that punish families,'" the platform continues.

Last November, "people familiar" with Trump's thinking revealed that the ex-president doesn't care about evangelical support anymore and that they have no "leverage" over him. Trump sees himself as the only game in town, sources told Rolling Stone, and doesn't want to kowtow to the Christian right anymore.
