Minnie Driver Says She Dodged a Bullet Not Marrying Josh Brolin

Minnie Driver Says She Dodged a Bullet Not Marrying Josh Brolin

Their engagement only lasted a few months.

Minnie Driver has been a hardworking actress for decades. At the turn of the century, Driver was coming off an Oscar nomination for her role in Good Will Hunting and juggling a bevy of film and TV roles while dating fellow actor Josh Brolin. Their engagement—and eventual separation—isn't something that Driver looks back on fondly.

In a new interview with British newspaper The Times, Driver reflected on her relationship to the institution of marriage and wondered why she was so dead-set on tying the knot. She confessed her father's infidelities when she was young might have affected how she navigates relationships.

"If I look at my history, what it did was make me want to be married so much and then choose men who were so not the right men to be married to," she said. "So I would carry on longing to be married and to have that conservative version [of a relationship], find men who had no interest in that, and then if one did, run a mile."

Her engagement to Brolin in particular stands out as a proverbial bullet that she dodged.

"The one time I was engaged it would have been, I think, the biggest mistake of my life," she said honestly. "But now I’m with someone [documentary filmmaker Addison O’Dea] who doesn’t want to get married but who is the most devoted, loving, extraordinary [person]… Everything I could have wanted in my childhood idea of a husband, he actually is."

Driver's latest movie The Beekeeper is now streaming on Prime Video.
