Portland could see record number of consecutive 90-degree days

The number of consecutive days at or above 100-degrees and 90-degrees in Portland is threatened with the Pacific Northwest's latest heat wave.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The number of consecutive days at or above 100 degrees and 90 degrees in Portland is threatened by the Pacific Northwest's latest heat wave.

In 1941, Portland saw a total of five consecutive days with temperatures at or above 100 degrees, according to Portland's National Weather Service. Temperatures climbed to at least 100 on July 13 and continue through July 17. This nearly 85-year-old record is now threatened as the number of days at or above 100 degrees grows this week.

Portland International Airport saw its first official 100-degree reading on Sunday. That was the first of the 100-degree heat expected along the Willamette Valley this week. Temperatures are expected to continue to warm above the century mark this week.

Temperatures will likely climb into the low 100s again Monday and Tuesday. The peak of Portland's latest heat wave will come Tuesday with a high temperature approaching 105 degrees.

Portland won't likely break the record of five consecutive days at or above 100 degrees, but will fall in the category of fourth most consecutive days with a temperature at or above 100. That wouldn't be the only time Portland has seen that many days in a row with toasty temperatures. A total of three consecutive days at or above 100 degrees was also recorded in 2021, 2009, 1994, 1977, 1971, and 1942.

The dangerous heat isn't over yet. Despite seeing temperatures fall below 100 by Wednesday, afternoon highs will remain in the 90s through the end of the week. If temperatures continue to sit at or above 90 degrees through the end of the week that could break a different record.

The most consecutive days with temperatures at or above 90 degrees in Portland sits at 10. In 2009, Portland saw 10 days stretching from July 25 to August 3 where temperatures sat at or above 90. That 15-year-old record could potentially come to an end.

The KOIN 6 Weather Team is forecasting temperatures to stay warmer than 90 through the end of the weekend. That could potentially leave Portland with a total of more than 11 days at or above 90 degrees.
