TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- An investigation is underway, and police are working to identify a man after he died in the Hudson River in the city of Troy on Monday.

Troy patrol officers were in the area of 2nd Avenue and 116th Street after receiving community complaints of suspicious activity in the area. An officer in a marked vehicle attempted to interview a man riding a bicycle, police said.

Police said the officer repeatedly asked him to stop, but the man kept riding his bike, and fled from the officer. Police said he rode onto 1st Avenue while the officer followed with his lights and siren activated. The bicyclist kept riding through a backyard and over an embankment into the Hudson River.

The officer used a water rescue apparatus while a second officer entered the water. Rescue efforts continued with the help of the Troy Fire Department and the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team. The man was located deceased under the water.

Police are working to identify the man and notify his next of kin. The New York State Attorney General's Office of Special Investigations was notified.
