I really think there's nothing in it. Southgate has been unerringly loyal to Pickford for years, despite many times he has faced criticism, and has always selected him and relied on him for tournaments and big games. And in return Pickford has always delivered.

When he says ''the goalkeeper will always make at least one save'', he's not talking about general goalkeepers. He's referring to Pickford as his goalkeeper, and he's saying that he will always save at least one penalty (something I've heard said about Pickford by other people). It's a mark of respect.
Yep, agree with that, as before I just thought it was a strange way of referencing, but not referencing, your own keeper who has a name, like everyone else he specifically named that took part in the shoot out. It kind of sounded to me like how a non-English manager (picturing Mourinho) might begrudgingly address the opposition keeper who had a good game after a loss, rather than highlighting a star player who performed very well.

Not suggesting that there was anything necessarily in it, just that it came across a bit odd. I think AjaxAndy's thoughts on the psychology and media management are probably pretty close to the mark, and paraphrasing Ronay from his latest article, a keeper is only ever minutes away from error so let's not highlight him.
