My cousin wanted to add a ‘unique’ spin to her baby’s name but it’s a ‘tragedeigh’ – people won’t get it

A WOMAN has slammed her cousin for wanting to give her baby a ”tragedeigh” name that she reckons people simply won’t get.

The anonymous woman took to Reddit to desperately seek advice after failing to get through to her relative about the ”atrocious” moniker she’s picked for her little one.

The horrified woman shared the story on the popular ”tragedeigh” thread, where users often post names that are “deliberately misspelled or completely made up to appear more unique than it actually is”.

She explained how her cousin was fond of the traditional name Phoebe – but keen to add her own ”unique” spin to it, she has to spell it Feabe.

The woman wrote: “I’ve tried to convince her that people won’t understand how to say it, and the traditional spelling looks a lot prettier, but she has her mind set.

”She says nobody will read it differently, and uses the names Lia and Lea as examples.

”I just don’t think it’s the same thing.

”But tell me, is it a tragedeigh like I think it is? Will the kid get bullied?”

It is more than a tragedy. The poor kid will be called Feeble or Febreeze

According to the Redditor, she’s spent several weeks desperately trying to talk the cousin out of it and convince her to stick to the original spelling.

However, with the due date approaching fast, she’s starting to fear for the baby more and more.

She added: “I’m struggling here on trying to find ways to convince her to change it.

”I texted her about the Phineas and Ferb reference the kid is going to get, and she just said that she loved the show as a kid.

“My cousin and I are super close, like sisters, so any suggestions? It also doesn’t help that her middle name will be spelt Feiey, like Fae for Fairy. So Feabe Feiey.”

Sharing their thoughts on the situation, one user said: “Wouldn’t Fea be a feminine form of feo, Spanish for ugly?

”Even if not, any chance you can convince your cousin of that?”

Are Unique Baby Names Worth The Hassle?

Fabulous' Deputy Editor reveals the turmoil she faced with her own name while growing up.

When I was a child, all I wanted was one of those personalised keyrings with my name on it.

But no joy, the closest I could find was Rosie, Joseph (not great for a little girl) and Joanne.

Josie is short for Josephine, which is a French name, and I managed to reach my 20s without ever meeting anyone who shared it.

When I try to introduce myself to people, I get all sorts of random things – like Tracey and Stacey – which can be pretty annoying.

Although I have come into contact with a couple of Josies over the last year – there seems to be a few of us around my age – it’s still a much rarer name than most of my friends have.

On the whole I don’t mind it, at least it’s not rude or crazily spelt.

And it means I can get away with ‘doing a Cheryl’ and just referring to myself as Josie.

I’m getting married this year and some friends are shocked that I’m changing my surname, as it’s not seen as very cool or feminist to do so these days, but I explain to them that I’m not that attached to Griffiths as I’d always just say ‘hi it’s Josie’ when ringing a mate up.

I think it’s nice to be unique and I’ll definitely try and replicate this when naming my own kids.

It’s the rude names you’ve got to watch out for, so after nine years as a lifestyle journalist I’ll definitely be avoiding those.

Another user added: “I would pronounce Feabe as Feeb. Maybe Fabe as a distant second guess.”

A third commented: “Any elementary teacher will tell you that Phoebe spelled as Feabe is going to get teased as Flea be and when she’s older?

”Even worse, Fee is for sale to the highest bidder. Kids are Cruel. Girls are crueler.”

One more Redditor remarked: “It is more than a tragedy. The poor kid will be called Feeble or Febreeze, and even well-intentioned people will say it incorrectly.”
