2024 Emmy Experts predict Best Competition Program: ‘The Traitors’ will claim victory
Having trouble predicting what will win Best Competition Program at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority of them believe the trophy will go to Peacock’s “The Traitors.” The other potential nominees, per the Experts’ current racetrack odds, are MTV’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Bravo’s “Top Chef,” NBC’s “The Voice” and CBS’s “Survivor.”
As of this writing, six out of our nine Emmy Experts predict a victory for “The Traitors” Season 2: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine) and Ray Richmond (Gold Derby). This installment was chock-full of reality TV alums, and tasked innocent players (the Faithfuls) with trying to identify who among them were actually murderers in plain sight (the Traitors). Last year “The Traitors” won Best Reality Casting, but it was strangely snubbed in the top Emmy races for series and host (Alan Cumming).
The remaining three Emmyologists — Ben Travers (Indiewire), Jazz Tangcay (Variety) and Susan King (Gold Derby) — instead believe “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 16 will prevail. The Sweet Sixteen cycle crowned Nymphia Wind from Taiwan as the ultimate champion and featured a memorable musical spoof titled “The Sound of Rusic.” “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has won 29 Emmy Awards through the years including five for Best Competition Program and eight for RuPaul Charles as Best Reality Host.

Our pundits collectively have “Top Chef” Season 21 in third place. The recent Wisconsin-set edition welcomed new host Kristen Kish alongside judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons, with Danny Garcia winning the competition. “Top Chef” claimed the top Emmy only once before — for Season 6 in 2010. Can the cooking show rebound in 2024?
Also looking strong in our Experts’ rankings is “The Voice” for Seasons 24 and 25, and “Survivor” for Seasons 45 and 46. The singing program previously won this category four times, while the survival show is still hoping for its first victory in the top race.
Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Competition Program category include “RuPaul’s Drag Race” in 2023 and 2021-18, “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls” in 2022, and “The Voice” in 2017-15 and ’13.
