First-time starter becomes a first-time honoree

As trade rumors swirl this month, Garrett Crochet added a bit of cachet to his resume: All-Star.

The southpaw was selected by the players as an American League reserve at the 2024 All-Star Game to be played on July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Crochet is 6-6 with a 3.08 ERA, 23 walks, 146 strikeouts, 12.47 per 9.0 IP), 0.968 WHIP and a 3.9 WAR over 19 starts this season, his first as a starter in the major leagues. His WAR trails only Erick Fedde (4.0) for staff and entire team honors.

Crochet leads all of baseball in games started (19), strikeouts and K/9, and leads the American League with a 2.43 FIP.

Here are some additional notes from Sunday’s White Sox news release. Crochet:

Has joined Jack McDowell (1991-93), Chris Sale (2012-16) and Carlos Rodón (2021) as pitchers selected by the White Sox in the first round to make the All-Star Team

Is the first Sox starting pitcher to make the team since RHP Lance Lynn and Rodón in 2021, and is the first White Sox pitcher since Sale in 2012 to be selected in his first full season as a starter

Has 146 strikeouts, the third-highest total in franchise history before the All-Star Break behind Sale (157) in 2015 and Dylan Cease (150) in 2022 … his 12.52 strikeouts per 9.0 IP would break the franchise single-season mark of 12.28 set by Cease in 2021

Is the only MLB pitcher since at least 1901 to record 145-plus strikeouts with 23 walks or less over his first 19 career starts

Has struck out 10-plus six times in 2024 (career-high 13 on June 13 at Seattle), tied with Tyler Glasnow for the most in baseball

Is 5-2 with a 1.66 ERA, 99 strikeouts (12.61 per 9.0 IP), 0.91 WHIP and .193 opponents average over his last 12 starts … leads all MLB pitchers during that span in ERA, SO/9.0 IP and OPS (.491) and ranks among the leaders in WHIP, SO/BB ratio (third, 7.07) and opponents average (5th)

Has allowed three runs or fewer in 13 straight starts since April 29 (four scoreless), the longest streak by a Sox pitcher since Mark Buehrle went 18 in a row from April 27-Aug. 11, 2011

Was named AL Pitcher of the Month for June after going 1-1 with a 1.91 ERA, six walks and 56 strikeouts over six starts in June … became the first Sox pitcher to receive the award since Cease in June and July 2022

Threw 24 consecutive scoreless innings from May 4-27, the longest streak by a Sox pitcher in a single season since Jesse Crain (29 innings) in 2013

Although it seems unlikely he’ll continue to produce as projected given a pitch/innings limit as the season wears on, Crochet is on pace for a 6.9 WAR season, which would be the best for the White Sox since 2003 and rank 27th all-time for a single campaign.
