BREAUX BRIDGE, La. (KLFY)-- A $75,000 project is the works to install decorative LED lights on four sections of the historic bridge in Breaux Bridge.

Mayor Ricky Calais said the state of Louisiana approved a grant for the city of Breaux Bridge to refurbish the paint on the bridge three years ago. The money left over from the grant is being used to install the lights.

"If anyone knows the history of the city of Breaux Bridge we exist really because of that bridge or because of the fact that a bridge was constructed there in the early 1800s", Calais said.

These lights will be able to change colors, depending on the event or holiday. Calais said he is excited for residents and tourists to experience the beautiful nature of the bridge lights.

"I like the fact that we have people that visit Breaux Bridge from all around the country and really around the world", Calais said. "Now to be able to have pictures I would suspect in many cases they'll come back in the evening to be able to take pictures with the bridge lit up in the background".

He said the first step of the project is to get a permit approved by DOTD. Once approved, an electrical contractor can begin the process of tapping into the existing electrical system to install the lights. The city is on track to obtain the permit within the next 30 days.

Calais hopes to have the project completed by the end of September.
