Paul George: 'I was close to going to Toronto'

PAUL GEORGE: “I was close to going to Toronto. We were deciding to go to Toronto or to Clippers. Ultimately, the Clippers put something better, a better package together, a better trade package that sent me to LA. But I was close. He was going to re-sign to Toronto, and we were going to go to Toronto. That was the origin and beginning of that story, and it was just a whirlwind of how it played out. It seems like yesterday, which is crazy.”

Interesting to hear Paul George, on his pod, give his side of negotiations w/ Clippers. He said LA’s 1st offer was 2yrs/$60 mil — “disrespectful.” Then LA went to $45 mil AAV. PG said he would’ve taken Kawhi deal but LA offered too late. He asked for no-trade clause; LA said no. – 12:31 PM

More on this storyline

PAUL GEORGE: “I’ve been to his crib once, though, where he was there, his Toronto crib. Crazy. That house is stupid. Crazy house. I know it’s off subject, but while we’re on the subject of Drake’s house, It was stupid. He got a club in his s***, a club inside the crib. The full court basketball s*** is crazy. He got a big ass indoor pool. He got two studios. His award room was just stacked. So many awards, so many collectibles.” -via YouTube / July 9, 2024
“I want to know, did you have any conversations with Kawhi before you made the decision to leave the Clippers? When did you have that conversation, and how did it go? PAUL GEORGE: “Yeah, absolutely, absolutely. I owed Kawhi that conversation. I called him up and was just like, ‘Man, listen, you know, I think I’mma go elsewhere.’ Conversations with the Clippers didn’t go how I wanted to. I kind of broke down how I told you guys how it all played out. We had that conversation, and I was like, ‘Man, I got to do what’s best.’ He understood. He was like, ‘I mean, go get your bag. Like, P, go get your bag. I can’t even be mad at you.'” -via YouTube / July 9, 2024
PAUL GEORGE: “I thought, you know, and I look at Kawhi as one of my best friends in this league. Somebody that, you know, I f*** with. Our families love each other. So it was tough to leave him. Just with how much I enjoyed being out there with him. That was one of the big decisions, too, that weighed a lot on me. Damn, I’m leaving my boy. Leaving Kawhi. But I had to have that conversation with him. We talked, and he gave me his blessings of, ‘Man, just go do what’s best for you.'” -via YouTube / July 9, 2024
