Former batting legend Rahul Dravid has gotten numerous standing ovations during his illustrious playing career.
For the former Indian captain, however, earning the T20 World Cup title in his role as coach was a new high.
Cricketer Dravid never seemed to be able to win the ODI World Cup championship. He was the leading run scorer in the 1999 ODI World Cup with 461 runs. In the 2003 ODI World Cup, India advanced to the final but lost to the formidable Australians.
India was captained by Dravid in the 2007 ODI World Cup, however after losing to Bangladesh, they experienced a great deal of sadness and were eliminated.
But Dravid’s status as one of the best batsmen in history did not change despite his failure to bring home a World Cup trophy.
In the 2023 ODI World Cup, India crushed everyone at home under Dravid’s coaching until losing at the last hurdle.
Although Dravid was reluctant to carry on as coach, captain Rohit Sharma persuaded him to do so until the T20 World Cup.
India emerged as the top side in both Tests and ODIs under coach Dravid, and their triumph in the T20 World Cup was the cherry on top—it was his final tournament as a member of side India.
Thus, the new Dravid, who is renowned for his modest and down to earth demeanor, must be the one receiving standing ovations as the World Cup champion.
A viral video captures one such standing ovation that Dravid received at a Bengaluru cricket academy.
In the video, Dravid enters the academy and is welcomed by everyone in attendance including the personnel. Dravid, dressed simply in shorts and a t-shirt, is greeted with a bouquet of flowers and boisterous applause.
After thanking the staff and moving forward, Dravid is greeted by the academy’s students who have lined up and raised their bats in honor of him. He continues on, shaking hands with some of the children and, eventually, asking them to lower their bats in his signature simple-minded manner.
Gautam Gambhir, a former batsman for India, is reportedly set to take over as coach of the Indian squad after Dravid.
