CySEC awards €1,000 in student prizes in honour of late chairman

The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) announced on Tuesday that it has awarded a total of €1,000 in financial prizes as part of its annual student awards for the academic year 2023-2024.

The commission used this event to pay tribute to the first chairman of CySEC, the late Frixos Sorokos, with awards being granted in his memory.

The commission said that Sorokos laid the foundations for the creation of the supervisory authority in Cyprus.

“The mission of CySEC is to exercise effective supervision to ensure the protection of investors and the healthy development of the Cypriot capital market so that it becomes one of the safest, most reliable, and attractive investment destinations,” the commission said.

Regarding the awards, the announcement stated that Petros Petrou and Agisilaos D. Panayiotopoulos, both students at the European University Cyprus, each received a cash prize of €500.

The cash awards were presented on behalf of CySEC by officer Nicoletta Livera, during a graduation ceremony held on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at the European University Cyprus.

“The ultimate goal of CySEC through these annual awards is to encourage students to acquire or deepen their knowledge on issues that fall within the scope and work of CySEC, as well as the investment services sector it oversees, thereby enhancing and disseminating knowledge via academic research,” the commission said.

“The annual students award is part of CySEC’s efforts to promote and strengthen financial education in Cyprus, with particular emphasis on young people,” the statement concluded.
