MAGA lawmaker dodges question on whether he'd support a second civil war

Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) this week dodged a question about whether he'd support a violent uprising to overthrow the current United States government.

NOTUS reporter Haley Byrd Wilt on Monday tracked down Banks to ask him about the image he pinned to his Twitter account of the "Appeal to Heaven" flag on the same day former President Donald Trump was convicted on 34 felony charges by a jury in New York.

As Wilt explains, the flag's quote makes a reference to "the Enlightenment idea of the right of revolution" and that "in the absence of any other context, some commenters decided that he might view what was happening to Trump as dire enough to warrant some new kind of American revolution."

When asked about this, Banks would not clarify the meaning behind the post.

"I’ll let you make your own conclusions," Banks told her.

When pressed for clarification, Banks wouldn't offer any.

“I’m not sure what there is to misconstrue,” he said. “We’re in unprecedented times, and November will be the result of regular people taking our country back. And then we’ll have a reset, and then we’ll take back our government and our country from the elites and those who are trying to destroy it. So, you can infer whatever you’d like from that post.”

Wilt then asked Banks point-blank if he opposed launching a second civil war in the United States.

"That’s a crazy question,” Banks replied without providing a definitive answer.
