McDonald’s Debuts Tangy New Sauce Inspired by Iconic Anime

On July 9, McDonald's is debuting a new sauce with exclusive packaging featuring eight characters from an iconic Crunchyroll anime.

McDonald’s is teaming up with Crunchyroll’s iconic anime series Jujutsu Kaisen to debut an American twist on a Japanese fan-favorite sauce.

Beginning today, McDonald’s customers can try the brand new Special Grade Garlic Sauce when placing an order through the McDonald’s app. The new sauce is an app-exclusive, so is unavailable with in-store or third party orders.

The Special Grade Garlic Sauce, inspired by the celebrated Black Garlic Sauce from McDonald’s Japan, is tangy and sweet with notes of garlic and soy sauce. In a press release, McDonald’s said the sauce “introduces a new arc in our sauce line-up.”

The sauce features eight separate package designs featuring beloved Jujutsu Kaisen characters. McDonald’s encourages you to “collect them all” in order to reach your peak strength.

The manga, which began in 2018 and numbers 27 books to date, concerns high schooler Yuja Itadori’s initiation into a secretive organization known as Jujutsu Sorcerers, who are out to eliminate the curse of Ryomen Sukuna, an ancient king who continues to threaten the world after his death thousands of years earlier. Yuja Itadori inevitably becomes Sakuna’s human vessel, able to withstand the poison of his curse unlike many others.

In addition to Yuja Itadori and Sukuna, the other character’s featured on the Special Grade Garlic Sauce packets include Itadori’s fellow sorcerers Megumi Fushiguro, Nobara Kugisaki, Satoru Goju, and Kento Nanami; Mahito, a shapeshifting curse with destructive powers similar to Sakuna; and villainous sorcerer Suguru Geto.

You can grab McDonald’s new Special Grade Garlic Sauce “for free with any order of Chicken McNuggets, or pair it with your go-to order on the McDonald’s App to make a meal fit for any sorcerer.” Once again, the sauce is only available for orders made with the McDonald’s app.

As an added bonus, each purchase of the new sauce comes with a 30-day free trial of Crunchyroll, where you can stream full-length episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen and more than 1,000 anime classics.

The Special Grade Garlic Sauce is the second anime-inspired sauce McDonald’s has debuted this year. Back in February, it launched its Savory Chili “WcDonald’s” Sauce as well as a series of shorts animated by celebrated artist Acky Bright. Last year, McDonald’s premiered a limited-edition Mambo Sauce and a Sweet and Spicy Jam dip which were well received amongst the chain’s fans.
