Report: Gary Trent Jr., Spencer Dinwiddie possible free agent options for Lakers

If the Lakers do finally make a move this offseason, Gary Trent Jr. and Spencer Dinwiddie sit as potential options for the team to sign.

Whatever grand visions there were for the Lakers to make some big trade or big signing to reshape their roster have long gone by the wayside this summer. Over a week into free agency, the Lakers have effectively done nothing, only re-signing Max Christie and LeBron James.

The Lakers will almost certainly make a roster change at some point. Before then, a number of things will have to happen, like potentially offloading Cam Reddish or Christian Wood to free up roster spots.

Once we get to that point, though, two names the team could look to sign with the taxpayer midlevel exception are reportedly Gary Trent Jr. and Spencer Dinwiddie, according to Jovan Buha of The Athletic.

Dinwiddie’s half-season in Los Angeles was probably not what anyone envisioned or expected it to be. Running it back in hopes of better results with a whole preseason to embed him might be an option.

Trent Jr., meanwhile, is a player who has long, long been linked to the Lakers. With Terrance Ross no longer in the league, Trent Jr. has filled in that hole as the wing repeatedly linked to the Lakers throughout their career.

On paper, he could make some sense as a 3-point shooter. Last year, he shot 39.3% from the 3-point line and is a career 38.6% shooter for his career. He’s a fairly one-dimensional player in that regard as he’s been little more than a shooter, even if one that is willing to take mid-range jumpers as well.

Depending on how the Lakers reshape their roster with a trade, Trent Jr. could make sense as a scorer off the bench. The Lakers lacked that last season and, on top of that, JJ Redick has spoken of a desire for spacing and shooting.

Before we get to the point of picking a free agent to sign, the Lakers have a number of moves to make, though. And based on the speed they’re working at this offseason, there’s still another couple weeks before we get to that point.
