Sunshine Division closes one pantry over 'safety concerns'

Calling it a "difficult decision," Sunshine Division Executive Director Kyle Camberg announced they will close their food pantry on North Thompson over safety concerns.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Calling it a "difficult decision," Sunshine Division Executive Director Kyle Camberg announced they will close their food pantry on North Thompson over safety concerns.

Camberg made the announcement in an open letter to the "Community of Supporters" for the Sunshine Division.

Over the past 18 months, he said there have been "continuous safety concerns" at the North Thompson location, "putting out staff, volunteers and clients in harm's way."

Closing the food pantry at North Thompson was a decision "not taken lightly." While that pantry will close, the Stark Street Pantry will continue operating, possibly with "expanded service hours" to handle the influx of people who normally went to the North Thompson site.

"Centralizing our services in one location will provide a sense of security for everyone—clients, volunteers, and staff alike," Camberg said in the letter.

The Sunshine Division, however, will remain headquartered at North Thompson for both administrative staff and extra warehousing.

"We will continue to provide agency food distribution, home delivery, and our program with the Community Transition School from this location," Camberg said.

He also thanked the supporters for their understanding.

"We believe this approach will best allow us to continue our mission while ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved," he said.
