Topeka gang-related murder suspect released from jail

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The man police arrested for a gang-related killing in an affluent Topeka neighborhood is no longer in custody.

Prosecutors said they have “not yet charged” Dasanee Curry and the case is “under investigation.”

Curry was arrested for the June 21 murder of Brian Wright, 23, in an affluent Westboro neighborhood northeast of 17th and Gage. He was also accused of trying to kill a 23-year-old woman who lives feet from the shooting location. Police have said the crimes are gang-related.

Curry was booked into Shawnee County jail on June 27 and released on July 2 “without bond, pending a decision by the district attorney on filing charges,” a jail spokesman said.

When 27 News asked police about the investigation and the suspect’s release, they provided no details.

“The investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available at this time,” said Rosie Nichols, police spokeswoman.

A barrage of more than two dozen gunshots was heard and a black car riddled with bullet holes was removed from the scene in the 3100 block of Westover.

The gunfire hit a home with a family of four inside. Police said they are unknown to the shooting victims and suspects.
