Lansingburgh awarded $3.5 million for after-school programs

Lansingburgh Central School District and the Capital Region YMCA will continue to offer free after-school programs thanks to a $3.5 million grant from Learning and Enrichment After-School Program Supports (LEAPS).

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Lansingburgh Central School District and the Capital Region YMCA will continue to offer free after-school programs thanks to a $3.5 million grant from Learning and Enrichment After-School Program Supports (LEAPS). The funding comes in time as COVID-19 relief funding phases out.

The grant will help expand after-school student programs for the next five years. The school district and the Capital Region YMCA became partners in 2023 for after-school programming at Turnpike Elementary School and Rensselaer Park Elementary School.

The grant will modify current after-school programming to include community partner collaboration, expanding opportunities for students. According to the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, the grant allows for programs to accommodate a maximum of 80 students.

Registration can be completed on the Capital District YMCA website for the 2024 to 2025 elementary school after-school programs will open from Wednesday, July 10, to Wednesday, July 24. Lansingburgh Superintendent Antonio Abitabile said the district is grateful for the Capital District YMCA's support and for being able to continue its free after-school programs.

"Due to federal COVID-19 relief funding for school districts, we've offered after-school programming to our elementary school families free of charge in recent years," Abitabile said. "With those federal funds no longer available, this grant ensures continuity and stability for our students and school families who rely on our after-school services."
