New puffin license plate for sale from Oregon Coast Aquarium

A new license plate could be flying onto Oregon cars thanks to the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A new license plate could be flying onto Oregon cars thanks to the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

Vouchers just went on sale for the new "puffin plate" featuring the orange-billed seabird.

The new license plate, designed by the Oregon Coast Aquarium's graphic designer and marketing coordinator Cam Mullins, features a tufted puffin floating on the sea while it looks at fish underwater.

Tufted puffins are native to Oregon and they nest on rocky islands and headlands along the coast.

In order for the plates to move forward with production, the Aquarium said they need to sell 3,000 vouchers and once that is met they can begin making the plates.

Vouchers are $40 on the Aquarium's website and cover the plates surcharge fee and the Aquarium said that after the deduction of the DMV administrative costs, the funds will go to supporting the Aquarium's rehabilitation and conservation efforts.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is the only facility in the state that is authorized to care for endangered marine life like sea turtles, northern fur seals and snowy plovers.
