Resolving Cyprus problem ‘a top priority for Greece’

Resolving the Cyprus problem is a top national priority for Greece, the Greek Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Cyprus News Agency journalism awards ceremony at the Presidential Palace, Marinakis stressed the systematic efforts in coordination with the Republic to create conditions for a fair, sustainable, functional, and mutually acceptable solution within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions.

Marinakis also underlined Greece’s commitment to strengthening its presence both domestically and internationally, “drawing inspiration from Cyprus in the development of non-state universities, enhancing student support, and boosting its international standing on issues like migration and other significant challenges”.

Closing his speech, Marinakis marked the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. He reiterated “Greece’s unwavering stance on the Cyprus problem”, calling for a solution that respects Cyprus’ EU membership, eliminates occupying forces, and abolishes outdated systems of guarantees. 

He firmly rejected any two-state solution scenarios, asserting the united efforts of Athens and Nicosia in all international forums to resolve the division of Nicosia, the last divided capital in Europe.

“We are one, moving forward together. It is a great honour to be here, especially in 2024, with such good friends and worthy people. Thank you very much,” Marinakis concluded.
