Bartlett hopes jail reopening will boost local economy

BARTLETT, Texas (KXAN) -- A prison in Bartlett is making a comeback. The state closed, what was known as, the Bartlett State Jail in 2017 because there were not enough inmates. But now, it's opening back up. And that's a welcome sight to the people who call Bartlett home.

"It used to be full of antique shops and such and it's gone away," said Emily Kruse. She knows a thing or two about the local economy. Kruse owns and runs the Red and White grocery store right in the middle of town.

She is used to a busy lunch crowd. One that she hopes will only get busier when the jail returns later this fall.

"People are writing (about the jail) on Facebook," Kruse said. "They're excited because a lot of people don't have rides necessarily, and gas is so high right now. People can't afford to leave town to go to work."

"Personally, I think it's a good thing for Bartlett," said Mayor Chad Mees. "It's a good thing for our region. We're creating 300 jobs right here in and around Bartlett."

Outside the jail, which is now officially known as the Bartlett Unit, it's a little quiet. However, there are changes happening only visible from the inside.

The Texas Department of Justice said the jail will give inmates new options, including living in dorms, and specialized programs tailored for them to help them before they get released.

Something Kruse hopes will bring more foot and car traffic back into the middle of town.

"It's nice and cozy and a lot of new things are happening here," Kruse added.

The jail is expected to open in October 2024.
