Stylist reveals why you shouldn’t wash your hair the same day as a flight – and the way to care for locks when you land

FLYING can be stressful, but looking put-together is often the least of your problems.

A celebrity hair stylist has shared their low-maintenance haircare tips while on the go.

Rossano Ferretti explained that while it’s important to maintain a proper haircare routine during travels, it doesn’t have to be hard.

“A pre-, during, and post-flight hair care routine is essential to maintain healthy hair,” she said.

“There’s been a huge rise in in-flight skincare routines, but people often forget about their hair.

“The plane environment can be super drying for your strands, especially if your hair is already susceptible to dryness – but there [are] a few steps you can take to keep your hair healthy while traveling by plane.”

In order to keep your hair hydrated, she recommends keeping your system nourished from the inside out.

“The air inside a plane is extremely dry, which can lead to dehydrated hair, so hydration is essential,” Ferretti said.

“Make sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your flight to ensure your hair is well-hydrated.”

Before a flight, she recommends adding a lightweight moisture boost to your locks, like the Vivace Leave-In Conditioner Spray.

Others who feel the need to do so can also opt for a deep conditioning treatment for an extra layer of protection.

“Look for products with natural oils and proteins to lock in hydration,” she urged.

A mistake many people make, Ferretti added, is washing their hair on the day of boarding.

“Avoid washing your hair the day of your flight. Daily hair washing will strip the scalp of its natural oils, which is required to ensure the scalp is healthy and hair is strong with a natural shine,” she said.

“It is possible to refresh hair in between styles while also cleansing and nourishing your scalp.

“If you want to refresh hair again during the flight, use a dry shampoo. Our Vivace Dry Shampoo Creme is formulated using over 90% naturally derived, vegan, and bio-certified ingredients.

“Leaving no powdery or talc residue behind, the ingredients work to absorb excess oil and sweat, cleansing and nourishing while adding volume for a ‘just washed’ finish.”

Styling steps, such as avoiding heat, using protective hairstyles, and silk accessories, can also make a huge difference to the health of your strands.

“Tight hairstyles can damage certain hair types; a soft, messy braid is a perfect way to keep your hair in control,” she said.

“These styles minimize exposure to the dry air and reduce risk of tangling and breakage. Plus, they can be a stylish way to arrive at your destination.

“Silk is much gentler on your hair and reduces friction, which can help prevent breakage and frizz,” she added.

“A silk scarf or pillowcase is a great travel accessory to keep your hair smooth.”

Post-flight care and light TLC can restore much-needed moisture back to dehydrated hair.

“Rinse with cool water to help close the cuticles and lock in moisture. Apply a nourishing hair mask or oil to replenish any lost hydration; this will help restore your hair’s natural balance and shine,” she said.

“With a little bit of preparation and the right products, you can keep your hair looking and feeling its best no matter where your travels take you.”
