College Football Today: Malik Sherrod Could Shine as a Senior

The Bulldogs are going to be an exciting team to watch this season thanks to an offense that had 30 or more points a half dozen times last year and returns several key starters including Sherrod, who finished fourth in the conference in all-purpose yards. Could he lead the MWC in that department in 2024?

This week, Michigan managed to convince four-star cornerback Ivan Taylor to change his commitment from Notre Dame; Jaron Keawe Sagupolutele — the top remaining 2025 quarterback to commit — has chosen Cal; and Georgia has added 6’11” OT Jahzare Jackson — a former basketball recruit. Here are some other stories we’re following as we enter conference media days season next week.

Can Bulldogs Seize Another MWC Title?

As we’ve established, Boise State is the team to beat in the MWC in 2024, but do not count out the Fresno State Bulldogs. After all, they’ve won the conference title twice over the last six years.

We’re curious to see what running back Malik Sherrod will do as a senior after a breakout season in 2023 saw him lead the team in yardage on the ground (966). He piled up an impressive 5.6 YPC and hit paydirt nine times while adding 260 yards on 44 receptions and another score through the air — while showing tremendous presence of mind and relentless effort (see video below).

We know that Sherrod is going to be a major part of the Bulldog attack and that if he can build on what he did last year, he might not be so underrated any longer.

Preseason Heisman Watch

If you’re seeking a safe play as far as potential 2024 Heisman Trophy winners, you definitely want to consider new Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

Currently the co-fave to win the award (+750) as per FanDuel, the senior has had a remarkably consistent career, first with UCF and then with the Oklahoma Sooners with whom he probably enjoyed his finest season last year, setting career high in completions, completion percentage, passing yards and YPP.

And now he’s transferred for the second time, this time to the Ducks, where he will again be one of the top quarterbacks in college football, even if Oregon’s QB room is loaded. What makes Gabriel so good is his skill at digesting what he sees on the field to make smart decisions and he’s very confident passing out of the pocket. He’s also mobile enough to be a very strong backup QB in the NFL, one that could fill in as a starter periodically when needed.

Expect Gabriel to be a Day Three pick in the 2025 NFL Draft with a chance to improve his stock with a massive season.

RotoRob Tune of the Day

In addition to her jazz work, Billie Holiday also did a ton of swing music singing. In 1993, Verve devoted the 12th volume of its Jazz Masters series of records to her, and the album included the 1955 classic “Nice Work if You Can Get It,” which she recorded with Teddy Wilson and his Orchestra.
