Tyronn Lue on Paul George's departure: I'm disappointed he didn't come back

“You lose an important piece to the team like PG, it’s hard to replace,” Lue, an assistant coach for USA Basketball, told ESPN. “I’m disappointed that we weren’t able to get the deal done, disappointed he didn’t come back. It’s tough for the organization. We got to see how we move forward from here. “I talked to him many times, trying to see what his mindset was, what we need to do different, how we can help his process along. It’s unfortunate that he left.”

“It just comes down to, I haven’t won nothing, you know what I mean? And I’m not satisfied with that.”

More on this storyline

In his first comments about George’s departure, Leonard said Friday that he and George knew what needed to happen for the duo to stay together with the LA Clippers. George ended up signing a four-year, $212 million deal in free agency with the Sixers. “We knew what it was before the season,” Leonard said after USA Basketball’s practice on Tuesday. “We knew what it was going to come down to. So, we talked the whole way through. “It’s no surprise.” -via ESPN / July 9, 2024
“I’m really excited,” Oubre said of George. “I’ve always studied his game. I’ve always been a fan from afar. To be able to get different pieces and nuggets from him, learn his game a little bit–I think we offer different things, but we can both feed and learn off each other. But I’m really excited, man, to learn from him and to just help him do his thing with the rest of his career that he has left. I’m really excited.” -via Sixers Wire / July 9, 2024
Paul George: “Joel, simple like, ‘You know, I’mma space the floor for you, I’mma do this, that, like there’s so many ways we can play off one another beyond.’ And I just, you know, like I said, I’ve never played with someone so big and dominant like that. You know, he’s the best or one of the best centers in the league, bro. Like, that’s a beast, you know, baby Shaq.” -via YouTube / July 9, 2024
“My experience after Brooklyn, I think it was strategic the way I approached it. Getting with Ty Lue, definitely a different philosophy, a different approach than what I was used to. I soaked it in. It was just a great experience. Have the utmost respect for him. Then obviously going to Golden State and Steve Kerr, it was again a different take, a different way of doing it. That really opened my eyes. I sold that to Koby. “I look back on Brooklyn like man, there’s so many things I could do better. Then I saw it live. How does Steve do it? How does Ty do it? I think it’s really going to help me. The league is changing like we talked about and just getting, can you get ahead of the league? What’s happening? How quickly is it happening? How are we shifting? I think that’ll be a strength of ours. We will be able to be right with the league or be a step ahead.” -via Cleveland Plain Dealer / July 1, 2024
Now, he’ll return to coaching, reuniting with Ty Lue, whom he coached with the Houston Rockets and collaborated with at USA Basketball, in Los Angeles. “I’m really looking forward to it,” Van Gundy said. “People always ask me, ‘Are you sure you want to do it?’ You’re never sure until you do it. I’m sure I want to help, and I want to work, and I want to do it in basketball… I’m excited to go out there in any way (Ty Lue) deems fit, and fit in with his staff and try to help the Clippers achieve what they want to, which is win big and be a championship-level contender.” -via Awful Announcing / June 21, 2024
