New England Patriots star edge rusher Matthew Judon said all the right things a month ago about his contract situation.

But that didn’t change the fact that he’s reportedly unhappy with his current deal, which has him set to be paid well below the top players at his position with a $6.5 million base salary.

And FOX Sports’ Henry McKenna dropped a new detail Tuesday in regards to Judon’s contract dispute with the Patriots.

“Matthew Judon has asked for a new contract and the Patriots have made an offer, according to a source close to the situation,” McKenna wrote on the X platform. “But they are not currently close to agreeing to a new deal.”

Judon has watched a bevy of his teammates get new deals this offseason, but him and Davon Godchaux, who has been outspoken about his contract, haven’t received what they want from the Patriots.

It was just last offseason the Patriots reworked Judon’s contract to give him an immediate pay bump from $2 million to $14 million in guaranteed money for the 2023 season. But the Patriots might not be inclined to do that again with Judon, who is entering the final year of his four-year deal. He turns 32 years old next month and is coming off a major injury after being limited to four games last season due to a torn bicep.

Judon has been a big-time producer when healthy, though. He was a Pro Bowler in his first two seasons with the Patriots and led the team in sacks both of those years, including accumulating 15.5 sacks in the 2021 season.

Given the way the Patriots have handed out extensions to their own players this offseason, Judon probably feels he should be rewarded, too.

And no matter what Judon says about it, his contract situation is certainly something to keep an eye on with the Patriots opening up training camp in two weeks.
