DoveLewis set to double size of animal hospital starting this fall

Leaders hope the expansion will support the nonprofit's efforts to become a “comprehensive medical center."

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland animal hospital will double in size, becoming one of the nation’s largest veterinary facilities that isn’t affiliated with a university.

DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital will begin its expansion to 30,000 square feet later this November in Northwest Portland’s Slabtown neighborhood.

The nonprofit organization reported that it has added specialty medical services to its roster of emergency and critical care departments in recent years, but limited space has affected its ability to progress.

Leaders, including President and CEO Ron Morgan, hope the expansion will support the organization's efforts to become a “comprehensive medical center” that serves both pets and their owners.

“With eight treatment rooms, three surgical suites, and (12) exam rooms, DoveLewis will grow its specialty departments in the new building while creating more room for the in-demand urgent care, emergency care, and critical care services in the current hospital on NW Pettygrove Street,” the hospital said in a release.

After the expansion, visitors will also see new MRIs, X-rays, ultrasounds, underground parking and a 100-person community room.

The animal hospital accredits the renovation to a “visionary donation,” and hopes to raise $7 million through a capital campaign that will cover medical services and financial aid for low-income pet owners.

“We’re focused on advanced care resources that will improve the lives and lifespans of our pets,” Morgan said in a statement. “They’re family and they deserve the best, and that’s what we offer.”
