Albany PD investigating fatal Delaware Avenue shooting

One person has died after a shooting in the city of Albany.

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- One person has died after a shooting in the city of Albany. The shooting took place shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday on Delaware Avenue.

Police initially received a call for multiple people shot. A 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his upper extremities was found at the scene. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the incident appears to have begun as a dispute near the Stewart's at Delaware Avenue and Southern Boulevard. The dispute escalated, and the suspect began firing at a car with two passengers, a man and a woman.

The victim tried driving away as the shooter continued firing. The car crashed in the Stewart's parking lot. The female passenger was uninjured.

"No injuries. Obviously, knows the person that was shot," Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins said. "As much as she can, she's trying to provide some information, but it's a terribly traumatic event for that person as well."

Thirteen rounds were fired from a handgun. A second car had its window shot out. Police are investigating if it is connected.

Police are currently unsure if the victim and suspect knew one another; however, they are calling it a targeted shooting. Police said there was only one shooter, who ran away from the scene.

"All we have on the suspect is a lighter-skinned, black male. Handgun involved, one shooter," Hawkins explained. "We're canvassing the area right now, talking with witnesses. We have some video evidence that may be helpful for us."

A search for the suspect is ongoing, and the investigation is active.
