105-degree temps make intense firefight at San Fernando church even harder

Four firefighters were overcome by heat, and while three returned to fight the blaze, the fourth was hospitalized.

Fire crews were battling a fire Tuesday at a church in San Fernando, where several firefighters were treated for heat-related illness.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange said fire crews responded to the 1500 block of Glenoaks Boulevard around 12:50 p.m. Tuesday. The building was evacuated due to the intense flames in the attic, Prange said.

Fire crews cut holes through a roof and were spraying water onto the flames, according to Prange.

Over 100 firefighters battled the blaze at the one-story church, and the firefight was made more difficult due to temperatures that hit 105 degrees. said the LAFD spokesman.

Crews continued their work through the hot weather and knocked down the blaze in just over two hours, Prange said.

Paramedics treated four firefighters on scene for heat-related illnesses. Three rested and recovered enough to resume fighting the fire, and one was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation, Prange said.

The LAFD said the fire appeared to have been caused by construction on the roof, but the investigation is ongoing.
