2024 Emmy Experts predict Best Reality Host: RuPaul Charles expected to go 9-for-9

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Reality Host at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority of them believe the trophy will go to RuPaul Charles (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”). The other potential nominees, per the Experts’ current racetrack odds, are Alan Cumming (“The Traitors”), Nicole Byer (“The Big Nailed It! Baking Challenge”), Queer Eye Hosts (“Queer Eye”) and Kristen Kish (“Top Chef”).

As of this writing, five out of our eight Emmy Experts predict a victory for RuPaul: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Susan King (Gold Derby). He is eligible for the 16th season of MTV’s reality TV show, in which Nymphia Wind claimed the ultimate honor over Sapphira Cristál. RuPaul already has the all-time record in this specific category, winning eight trophies in a row for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” between 2016 and ’23. Will he now go nine-for-nine?

The remaining three Emmyologists — Clayton Davis (Variety), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine) and Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) — instead believe Cumming will prevail for “The Traitors.” He plays a villainously campy version of himself on the Peacock murder-mystery competition series, and is always impeccably dressed, whether he’s banishing contestants or presiding over a funeral. Cumming is four-time nominee at the Primetime Emmys: thrice for acting on “The Good Wife” and once for hosting the 69th Tony Awards.

Our pundits collectively have Byer in third place. “The Big Nailed It! Baking Challenge” offers a twist on the Netflix baking show’s classic formula by beginning with a group of 10 contestants and eliminating one per week until only the winner remains. Byer has been nominated four times already for hosting the original “Nailed It!” between 2020 and ’23.

Also looking strong in our Experts’ rankings are the five “Queer Eye” hosts for Season 8: Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Karamo Brown, Bobby Berk and Jonathan Van Ness. This batch of episodes filmed predominantly in New Orleans, Louisiana and served as Berk’s final season on the lifestyle improvement show.

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Reality Host category include RuPaul Charles (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”) in 2023-16, Jane Lynch (“Hollywood Game Night”) in 2015-14, Tim Gunn & Heidi Klum (“Project Runway”) in 2013, and Tom Bergeron (“Dancing with the Stars”) in 2012. Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
