New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) offered Rahul Dravid, the departing head coach of India, an additional Rs 2.5 crore bonus for winning the team’s second T20 World Cup. Dravid turned this offer down. Reports state that Dravid made the decision to guarantee parity by accepting the same Rs 2.5 crore incentive as his support staff.

At first, the BCCI had chosen to offer Dravid a bonus of Rs 5 crore, the same sum that was granted to the players on the playing squad.

But Dravid asked for his bonus to be lowered in order to match the Rs 2.5 crore awarded to the other support employees. This includes Vikram Rathore as the batting coach, T. Dilip as the fielding coach, and Paras Mhambrey as the bowling coach.

“Rahul wanted the same bonus money (Rs. 2.5 crore) as the rest of his support staff. We respect his sentiments,” a BCCI source reportedly disclosed.

According to media sources, the BCCI’s distribution plan had given Dravid and the 15 players in India’s winning squad each Rs 5 crore out of the Rs 125 crore prize money. The selectors and squad members who traveled were to receive a salary of Rs 1 crore apiece, while the support crew was to receive Rs 2.5 crore each.

Previously, Dravid has made a strong case for equitable award distribution. In 2018, Dravid declined a larger compensation for himself while serving as the head coach of India’s U-19 World Cup winning squad. The players would receive Rs 30 lakh each, and other support staff members would receive Rs 20 lakh, according to the BCCI’s original decision at the time. He would receive Rs 50 lakh. All of the coaching staff, including Dravid, received Rs 25 lakh each in the updated list that followed his request for an equal distribution.

Dravid’s efforts demonstrate his steadfast dedication to equality and teamwork, which have been defining characteristics of his coaching career and have raised the bar for morality and leadership in Indian cricket.
