Finance Ministry Changes Name, Gender of IRS Officer After His Request

In a milestone event, the Ministry of Finance has sanctioned a request from a top executive of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) to alter her name and gender in all official records. This marks an unprecedented event in the history of Indian civil services.

The Ministry of Finance has made a historic decision by approving an unusual request from a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer. The IRS officer requested the Ministry to change her name and gender in all official records. Notably, this is the first time this has happened in the Indian civil services.

Anusuya M, a 35-year-old serving as Joint Commissioner for the Chief Commissioner’s office in Hyderabad, has expressed her wish to alter her name to Anukathir Surya M and shift her gender identity from female to male.The order, a copy of which is with NDTV, said, “The request of Ms M Anusuya has been considered. Henceforth, the officer will be recognised as ‘Mr M Anukathir Surya’ in all official records.”

Starting his career in Chennai as an assistant commissioner back in December 2013, he consistently climbed the ladder of success. His dedication was rewarded with a promotion to deputy commissioner in 2018. Recently, he embraced new responsibilities and challenges with his changed role in Hyderabad.
