Leftover materials in Moosa Memorial Hospital demolition to be recycled

Demolition began at the hospital in June, but as progress is being made, it was determined in a meeting between Solid Waste and Parish President Jessie Bellard to use the materials taken from the demolition and use it to make improvements in repairs across the parish.

EUNICE, La. (KLFY) -- Demolition is still underway at the old Moosa Memorial Hospital in Eunice, but the question has become what's going to be done with all of the materials left over from the building? Richard LeBoeuf, executive director of St. Landry Parish Solid Waste, said it's actually going to be recycled for the betterment of the parish.

"It's such a vast amount of material," LeBouef said. "It's such a vast space that can be utilized in a whole bunch of different aspects. And I think it's going to be a plus saving tax dollars, putting that material where it needs to be used, and also some additional funding."

Demolition began at the hospital in June, but as progress is being made, it was determined in a meeting between Solid Waste and Parish President Jessie Bellard to use the materials taken from the demolition and use it to make improvements in repairs across the parish. Speaking with LeBouef, he does say it's going to be all of the materials from the building that are going to be used; from the metal that was used to keep the building standing all the way to the concrete that was used for the foundation, plus, everything from piping to tiles, even bricks.

"Is going to be ground and kept at their place to use for road business, which won't incur any expense to the parish and also all of the interconnect piping, all of the structure steel," LeBouef said. "That part is going to also be recycled and sold."

Lebouef said the recycling of the resources is a perfect way to carry on the legacy of the medical center that stood in Eunice for nearly 70 years.

"You think a place that was built, I think in the in the mid-fifties, it's kind of sad to see that that icon, you know, go away, but to see all of the resources being utilized so wisely, I have to say that President Bellard has really stepped up and put all of this to great use," LeBouef said.
