New Iberia woman charged with abandoning children

A New Iberia woman was arrested on charges of child desertion when she left two juveniles in her home while she was in Texas.

NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) – A New Iberia woman was arrested on charges of child desertion when she left two juveniles in her home while she was in Texas.

According to the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a residence in the 1200 block of Oil Center Drive on July 6, regarding a juvenile in need of medical attention. Deputies discovered Acadian Ambulance paramedics treating a 4-year-old male juvenile left in the care of his 11-year-old cousin.

The mother of the 4-year-old and aunt of the 11-year-old left the children in her home while she traveled to Houston, Texas. Both children were transported to Iberia Medical Center where the 4-year-old was treated. DSFC was contacted and the children were released to family members.

The mother of the 4-year-old, Shandi Migues, 31, was arrested and booked into the Iberia Parish Jail. She was charged with cruelty to a juvenile and child desertion.

Bond has been set at $200,000.
