Passenger traffic grows at Katowice Airport – Best June and first half of the year in its history

In June 2024, Katowice Airport set a record with 749,177 passengers, marking a 13.7% increase from 2023, achieving its best June ever.

The Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL S.A.) – the company managing Katowice Wojciech Korfanty International Airport in Pyrzowice (Poland) – has summarised passenger traffic for June 2024.

During the sixth month of 2024, Katowice Airport handled 749 177 passengers, i.e. 90 205 more (+13.7%) in comparison with the same time in 2023. It was the best June in the history of the Airport; the previous record-breaking result for that period was noted last year, when airlines carried 658 972 passengers.

285 222 passengers, 16 020 more (+5.9%) than in 2023, were served on regular flights, which are handled at Katowice Airport by Wizz Air, Ryanair, LOT Polish Airlines and Air Dolomiti/Lufthansa. Travellers most often chose scheduled flights connecting Katowice Airport with Dortmund, London-Luton, London-Stansted, Catania and Milan-Bergamo.

In June 2024, 462 285 passengers, i.e. 73 603 more (+18.9%) than during the sixth month of 2023, travelled via the network of charter flights which is operated for travel agencies. Most popular were holiday flights from Katowice Airport to Antalya, Hurghada, Marsa Alam, Heraklion and Djerba.

Last month, the daily record for number of served passengers, achieved on 16 July 2023 when 29 426 travellers were handled, was beaten three times at Katowice Airport. Firstly, 30 128 passengers were noted on 6 June 2024. A week later, 31 196 travellers were served, and 31 945 on 23 June 2024.

During thirty days of June 2024, the Airport saw 5 344 take-offs and landings, i.e. 332 more (+6.2%) than in 2023.

“Passenger traffic at Katowice Airport is developing in accordance with the forecast. We expect to handle approx. 830K passengers in both July and August. To meet demands of growing passenger traffic, we placed into service an additional arrivals hall, as well as 757 new parking spaces. We continue work on the specification of the new central passenger terminal. This year, we want to announce a tender for the designer of this investment,” said Artur Tomasik, the President of the Board of the Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL S.A.).

During the first half of 2024, Katowice Airport served 2 615 909 passengers, i.e. 369 964 more (+16.5%) than in 2023. On 6 June 2024 (Thursday), the airport handled the two millionth passenger. Never before in the history of Katowice Airport have so many passengers been handled so quickly. The record from 2023, when such a result was achieved on 20 June, was surpassed.

From January to the end of June, the Airport served 1 443 701 passengers on regular flights – 72 899 more (+5.3%) than in the same time in 2023. Charter flights were chosen by 1 164 890 travellers, i.e. 300 791 more (+34.8%) than last year. In the first half of 2024, Katowice Airport noted 21 364 take-offs and landings, i.e.  1 813 more (+9.3%) than in the first six months of 2023.

Market position, forecasts

Katowice Airport is one of the biggest regional airports in Poland. In 2023, 5.6m. passengers travelled via its network of flights. The forecast for 2024 estimates that over 6m. passengers will be handled, the most in the history of the Airport.
