Nico Williams has impressed this summer

Williams has been one of the stars of Spain’s Euros campaign, with the 21-year-old continuing to add to his growing reputation as one of the best young wingers in world football.

The Telegraph revealed back in April that Spurs were part of a group of Premier League clubs who were interested in the 21-year-old, who is reported to have a £42.8 million buyout clause in his deal at Athletic Club Bilbao.

The likes of Aston Villa and Liverpool have also been credited with an interest in the pacey wide-man (Football Insider) while Barcelona and Chelsea have also been named as potential contenders for the player’s signature (The Standard).

Williams himself has tended to play down the speculation over his future when asked about transfer rumours during the tournament in Germany (Nogomania).

Barcelona admit they have the funds for a Nico Williams deal

Laporta has now insisted that the Blaugrana would be able to afford a deal for the Spanish international this summer if they wished to pursue his signature.

When asked if Barca would be able to activate Williams’ release clause, the 62-year-old told Catalunya Radio: “As of today, yes. There will be good news in terms of the sporting side of things, we will announce things soon.

‘We are working on the deals that Hansi has requested.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The ‘as of today’ part suggests that Barca’s situation might change later in the window if they decide to make a move for some other players, with the club’s financial issues being well documented.

I get the feeling that if Williams does leave Athletic Club this summer, it will be to join a Premier League side.
