FAIRNESS, EQUITY, JUSTICE GUIDE STATE GOVERNMENT RELATIONS WITH LABOUR 

The Permanent Secretary, of the Ministry of Establishments and Training, Mrs. Olubusola Abidakun has said that the principles of fairness, equity and justice have always and will continue to underpin government relationships with labour unions.

She remarked today at the commencement of a two-day training programme organised by the Ministry for labour union members and other stakeholders in the State.

Mrs. Abidakun said that the State Government was striving to create workplaces where every employee feels not only valued and respected but also their contributions and rights are recognised and protected.

She averred that communication and dialogue are the cornerstone of a harmonious relationship between labour unions and the government, adding that open and honest communication helps to build trust, resolve conflicts and foster collaborative spirit.

The Permanent Secretary, therefore, charged labour union leaders to work constructively with the government to find solutions that would benefit both workers and the government.

Whilst acknowledging that the role of labour unions in advocating for workers’ rights and welfare was as critical as it has ever been, she said that the new world of work requires that the nature of labour unions’ advocacy must evolve in such a way as promote the well-being of workers and the progress of the State.

Abidakun reminded labour union members that the nature of work is undergoing profound changes as a result of technological advancement, globalisation and unstable economic conditions suggesting that maintaining a harmonious and cordial relationship between labour unions and government was crucial for the progress of the State.

In her words, “As labour leaders, you play an important role in managing the transformation. Your leadership is essential in creating an environment where mutual respect and collaboration thrive”.

She added that the training was designed to equip labour union members with the knowledge and skills necessary to lead effectively in this new era.

“This era requires continuous learning, reskilling and upskilling initiatives, which are essential components of the State’s strategy to sustain a harmonious labour and government relationship”, Mrs. Abidakun stated

In his presentation, titled: “Union Matters and Industrial Relations”, one of the facilitators, Mr. Biodun Bamgboye emphasised the need for Union Leaders to use the elements of consultation and conciliation more than consolidation and confrontation to achieve set objectives.

The quintessential public speaker who also doubles as Commissioner II of the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), harped on attitudes and mindsets that can enhance harmonious industrial relations in Lagos State Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

Other speakers include Dr. Biodun Onayele, Permanent Secretary, Wealth Creation and Employment and Dr. Rasheed Kolade, Director, Health Service, both delivered papers on Strengthening Employer-Employee Relations in the New World and Healthy Lifestyle as key to Productivity among Union members respectively.
