Don’t forget to clean your blinds – my step-by-step guide, plus a convenient tool that will spruce up your curtains

MOLD can build up if window dressings aren’t routinely cleaned and it only takes minimal effort to spruce them up, according to an expert.

She shared an essential guide for quickly cleaning curtains and blinds.

Yvonne Keal is a product manager at the UK-based window dressing company Hillarys.

Speaking to The U.S. Sun, she shared tips for how best to clean blinds and curtains.

PRISTINE BLINDS

Keal said roller blinds can be “easily” incorporated into your regular vacuuming routine to remove dust and dirt.

“Alternatively, use a damp cloth for a deeper clean,” she said.

“Remember to leave the blind down fully to air dry before pulling it back up to prevent the buildup of mold.

“If mold does appear due to condensation, specialist fabric detergent can be used for effective removal.”

She revealed wooden blinds require different cleaning methods and the “quickest” is using a feather duster or a microfibre cloth.

Walmart sells a feather duster with an extension handle for just $6.30, while a pack of microfibre cloths is $6.58.

“To give your blinds a more thorough clean, consider wiping each slat with a dry, lint-free cloth,” she said.

“The soft upholstery brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner can also be used to prevent dust build-up.”

“Stubborn stains can be efficiently removed using a damp cloth dipped in a diluted mix of detergent and lukewarm water, but you should be careful to avoid soaking the wood,” she added.

“Be sure to wipe away any excess moisture with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel to avoid  excess dampness.”

SPOTLESS CURTAINS

Keal said the soft brush attachment on vacuum cleaners can be used to spruce up curtains.

This is important as dust or pet hairs around the home can “accumulate” over time.

“And held steam cleaners are a convenient tool to help neaten your curtains up by removing creases and wrinkles,” she said.

Pressurized Handheld Steam Cleaner for Home, $55.99, Amazon

A highly rated multi-surface handheld steam cleaner is just $55.99 on Amazon.

It is suitable for cleaning bathrooms, kitchens, and “hard-to-reach” gaps, as well as curtains.

Keal revealed all of the hacks should be done using a particular movement for sparkling results.

“For all the above cleaning methods, you’ll get the best result by moving from the top to the bottom,” she said.

“Pay special attention to folds, edges, and the bottom of your window dressings where dust is more likely to build up.”
