Scholar Athletes of the Year: City Honors' Neveah Foster, Canisius' Matthew Hassenfratz
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — City Honor’s Nevaeh Foster and Canisius’ Matthew Hassenfratz were recognized as two of News 4's male and female Scholar Athletes of the Month earlier this school year. They have been named as our News 4 Scholar Athletes of the Year after all their hard work and dedication both athletically and academically.
Nevaeh and Matthew were each awarded a $3,000 scholarship check, presented by Transitowne Automotive group in Williamsville.
Neveah Foster
Nevaeh ran cross country and played rugby but her main sport is basketball as she played varsity for City Honors High School for four years. She ended the year with a 4.0 GPA and will attend SUNY Brockport to study exercise science.
She was named the sole captain of the basketball team this year.
“I nicknamed her the ‘mother hen’, she just took such good care of us on the court, off the court. I think people just felt because she was involved everything was good. she kind of protected us," head coach Trey Gardner said.

Matthew Hassenfratz
Matthew takes part in many activities as a Crusader. He’s a member of their bowling, hockey and tennis teams as well as the drama club. Matthew ended the year with a 4.0 GPA and will attend Case Western Reserve University to study engineering.
Matthew had a special moment in his bowling career just a few months ago. Before his match, he had lost someone very special to him, his grandfather. Even though he wasn’t physically here, his grandfather’s presence was still felt at the lanes when Matthew bowled a perfect 300 to qualify for the state championship.
