It’s been a struggle lately in The Bronx, and it appears a second consecutive series loss to the Boston Red Sox was enough to bring with it some change. New York general manager Brian Cashman decided to accompany the team on its latest road trip starting Tuesday.

“I’ve decided to join us,” Cashman said before Tuesday’s game, per ESPN. “It’s been a struggle, obviously, but thankfully we got out of the gates really strong, so hopefully that cushion will allow us to work through this sooner than later on because it’s gone on long enough.

“… There’s concern. It’s my job to be in a position to never assume anything. Ultimately today’s a new day. We’re hoping to get back on track today.”

How annoying must that be for the Yanks?

It’s like if you flunked a couple of tests and your teacher decides it’s a great idea to bring your parents in to watch over you for your next exam. Who thinks that is going to help? New York also has the principal breathing down its neck, as owner Hal Steinbrenner is in attendance for the three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Yankees have a 5-16 record since June 15, which is the worst in the majors. New York had the best mark in baseball through June 14 at 50-22, so it’s safe to call the latest stretch a major downfall.

“It starts with me,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after Tuesday’s loss to the Rays. “I filter into the coaches, and it’s about us trying to get these guys prepared the best we can, setting a tone with how we present ourselves. It’s on us as coaches to put our players in the best position possible to go out there and be successful. We got to continue to try and do that to the best of our ability and trust that the ball is going to start to bounce our way a little bit and we can get it rolling here.”

It isn’t going to be easy for New York to right the ship. The Baltimore Orioles will host the Yankees in their final series before the 2024 MLB All-Star break, which could prove to be a make-or-break period for the club.
