Bette Midler Reflects on Her Friendships With A-Listers Cher, David Bowie & Prince

From Broadway to the big screen, Bette Midler is one of Hollywood’s biggest icons. So, of course, she’s rubbed shoulders with a few other Hollywood legends too.

In an exclusive clip given to SheKnows of the Wednesday, July 10 episode of Busy This Week on QVC+, Midler looked back at some of her closest celebrity friends, including her cameo with Cher in the pilot episode of The Cher Show in 1975.

“She had broken up with Sonny [Bono] and she had gotten this gigantic contract with CBS and it was the first show of that long run that she did,” Midler said of the “Believe” singer. “She was so beautiful, and the clothes and the body and she had Bob Mackie with her – it was a big deal.”

Midler even went on to remember a funny moment that happened while they filmed a dance sequence with Elton John and the late comedian Flip Wilson. “It was a thrill except that Flip Wilson was in the show and when it came to that number Flip Wilson kind of disappeared,” Midler remembered, adding that they called for him to no avail. “He just had enough,” she added.

Midler also looked back at some of her close friends who have passed.

“[David] Bowie was an angel, [the] sweetest guy ever,” Midler said. “We used to watch movies. He was so beautiful. That was a shock that he passed, a real shock.”

The same goes for her other revered friends Michael Jackson and Prince. “When Michael Jackson died I didn’t know what to do,” she said, adding that Prince was the same because she “basically worshipped him.”

Co-host Caissie St. Onge then asked for details about a story she’d heard about Midler not wanting to join Prince backstage after a show.

“Sometimes I really did walk around like a ragamuffin and I knew that there’d be photographers and I didn’t want to chance it,” Midler admitted. “I really did love him.”
