Wrexham in huge blunder as they announce promotion hero on release list – only to discover he was still under CONTRACT

WREXHAM have been left red-faced after an administrative error saw a player the club released still under contract.

The League One new boys are owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

However, an admin error means he is still contracted at the club until next season[/caption]

They have rocketed up the divisions since the takeover, earning back-to-back promotions from the National League and League Two.

However, following the conclusion of their season, the club announced an eight-player long list of stars they were releasing.

One of these included 30-year-old defender, Jordan Tunnicliffe, who played 39 games for the club over the course of two seasons with the Red Dragons.

Tunnicliffe had said goodbye to his former team-mates and was subsequently removed from the club’s WhatsApp Group.

But an admin gaffe has in-fact left Tunnicliffe still under contract with the club for another 12 months.

The Daily Mail revealed that there was a mistake when Tunnicliffe’s contract was originally drawn up that had the expiry of the deal down as June 2025 rather than June 2024.

A club statement to the Mail confirmed Wrexham were aware of the situation and were in discussions with the player to resolve the issue, which had also been referred to an independent determination.

Tunnicliffe’s final appearance for Wrexham came during their 1-0 defeat to Gillingham back on February 24.

When news of his exit was announced, the north Wales club’s manager Phil Parkinson said they were losing an “immense character” from the team.

Formerly a part of West Brom‘s academy, he has previously starred for Crawley, Fylde, Kidderminster and Barnsley among others.

Wrexham are touring the USA for pre-season once again, but will be without star man Paul Mullin after spinal surgery.

Meanwhile, the club have signed ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo on a free transfer after he was released by the Gunners.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Wrexham, with Parkinson saying the club would do what they could to keep the star for the upcoming season.
