If you’re a fan of prestige programming, then you probably know that FX has been absolutely killing it in recent years, with top-tier series like Shogun and The Bear.

Despite initially being billed as a limited series, Shogun has been renewed for a second season.

And it’s been reported that The Bear Season 4 has already been filmed, though there’s been no official confirmation on that front.

Whatever the case, neither series was included in today’s announcement, which focused primarily on new shows, a promising sophomore series, and some intriguing documentary projects.

So without further ado, let’s dive in and see what’s on the menu.

English Teacher

A comedy series in which creator Brian Jordan Alvarez plays a high school teacher in Austin.

According to the description from FX, Alvarez “often finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional and political aspects of working at a high school.”

The logline is giving us Abbott Elementary vibes, which isn’t a bad thing!

“Evan wants to be a principled person but often runs into trouble because of it. By Evan’s side at Morrison-Hensley High is his friend group of other teachers,” reads a press release issued today.

“Chief among them is his best friend ‘Gwen Sanders’ (Stephanie Koenig), the eager and optimistic history teacher who tends to see the best in people, even when she probably shouldn’t.

“Then there’s PE teacher ‘Markie Hillridge’ (Sean Patton). When they aren’t disagreeing, Markie and Evan share a genuine bond… but they’re usually disagreeing,” the announcement continues.

Evan’s ex-boyfriend ‘Malcolm’ (Jordan Firstman) is a former teacher at Morrison.

“Wild and free-thinking, Malcolm often draws Evan back into a pseudo-relationship.”

The eight-episode first season of English Teacher is set to premiere on Monday, September 2.

Up next is the second season of the Jeff Bridges-John Lithgow spy thriller The Old Man.

“Former CIA agent ‘Dan Chase’ (Bridges) and former FBI Assistant Director ‘Harold Harper’ (JohnLithgow) set off on their most important mission to date — to recover ‘Emily Chase’ (Alia Shawkat) after she is kidnapped by ‘Faraz Hamzad’ (Navid Negahban), a powerful Afghan tribal leader,” reads today’s announcement.

“With all three men claiming her as their daughter, Emily finds herself in an identity crisis that has dire implications,” the statement continues.

“As Chase and Harper fight their way to get to Emily, Hamzad is forced to make decisions that could endanger his family and the village he has led faithfully for a lifetime.”

American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez

Described as a “new limited series franchise,” this 10-part drama will focus on the sad, strange case of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.

After being convicted of murder in 2015, Hernandez was charged with two additional homicides.

He was acquitted of the later charges but hung himself in his prison cell the following day.
