AOC introduces impeachment resolutions against Justices Alito and Thomas

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) introduced legislation to impeach U.S. Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas.

In bills filed on Wednesday, the Democratic lawmaker said the two justices should be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors related to refusals to recuse themselves in some instances and for failing to disclose gifts from conservative donors.

One piece of legislation pointed out that Alito had allowed an upside-down American flag to be flown at his house following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

"By displaying this flag, he showed support for domestic enemies of the United States, some of whom engaged in an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building, in violation of his Constitutional Oath of office," the bill said.

The bill argued Alito should have recused himself in several cases involving former President Donald Trump and Jan. 6 defendants.

"Since a ‘stop the steal’ symbol first flew on a flagpole outside Justice Alito’s home, it has been reasonable to question Justice Alito’s ability to impartially adjudicate matters related to the January 6 insurrection," Ocasio-Cortez's legislation explained.

Separate legislation presented by Ocasio-Cortez said Thomas should be impeached for failing to disclose gifts.

"Over the course of at least 15 years, Justice Thomas and his wife, Virginia 'Ginni' Thomas, have received gifts of significant value from Harlan Crow without reporting the source, description, and value of such gifts," the bill insisted.

"By accepting but failing to disclose multiple gifts of luxury vacations and travel, Justice Thomas has undermined the impartiality and integrity of the Supreme Court in violation of the public trust," the legislation added. "Wherefore, Justice Thomas, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial and removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust, or profit under the United States."

The bill also noted that Thomas had participated in "numerous proceedings concerning challenges to the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election" despite his wife's activism in support of former President Donald Trump's "Stop the Steal" movement.

"Justice Thomas’s impartiality in the aforementioned proceedings might reasonably be questioned because Mrs. Thomas actively participated in contemporaneous political and legal efforts to overturn Mr. Trump’s defeat in the 2020 Presidential election," the legislation said.
