Olivia Munn and John Mulaney relationship explained
THE comedian and actress were first photographed together in June 2021, though they kept their relationship largely under wraps for a few months.
John Mulaney confirmed the duo were dating – and announced that Olivia Munn was pregnant with their first child – in September 2021.
Are Olivia Munn and John Mulaney dating?
Mulaney and Munn met well before they were ever romantically involved.
During a 2015 interview with HuffPost Live, Munn revealed that they first met at a wedding, where she recalled being “so obsessed,” with spending time with him.
“We were at a wedding together and I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, do you and your fiancée want to go have dinner or something and go hang out?’” Munn said at the time.
“At first it was cool, and then I kept going up to him at the wedding like, ‘So, you having fun?’ I was just so obsessed with hanging out with and talking with him.”
Following their awkward first encounter, she later revealed that she tried to stay in touch with him after the wedding by sending emails but “he never emailed back.”
Munn later joked, “I might’ve got the wrong email—probably. That’s what I tell myself.”
The couple initially started dating around May 2021, just a few months before Mulaney officially filed for divorce from his first wife, multimedia artist Anna Marie Tendler, in July 2021.
Mulaney had reportedly asked Tendler for a divorce back in December 2020, and the couple separated a few months later.
At the time, a spokesperson for Mulaney confirmed the news to Page Six but added, “John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work.”
Mulaney’s divorce came as a shock to many, as even Tendler admitted she didn’t see it coming.
“I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage,” Tendler said in a statement.
“I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery,” she added.
Following Tendler’s emotional statement, fans were quick to jump to her defense claiming that Munn’s “home-wrecking” started back when Mulaney was in rehab.
A source revealed to OK! Magazine that, “[Munn] and John had exchanged texts while he was in rehab, and things obviously turned romantic after he got out.”
Months after the romance speculation began, Mulaney finally confirmed that he and Munn were together.
He revealed the news during an episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.
“I went to rehab in September, I got out in October, I moved out of my home from my ex-wife….” he told Seth Meyers.
“Then in the spring I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia [Munn].”
Do they have any children together?
During the same episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, Mulaney opened up about his struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction, and how Olivia helped “save” him.
“I didn’t want an intervention. At that moment in time, I wanted to continue using drugs,” Mulaney said.
“Sitting here tonight, I’m so grateful to you and to everyone there for saving my life,” he added, referring to Meyers and the other comedians who came together for his intervention.
Mulaney then dropped some bombshell news – that Munn was pregnant with the couple’s first child.
“I got into this relationship that’s been really beautiful with someone incredible. And we’re having a baby together. I was nervous when I was about to say the news!”
“Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself in this early journey out of recovery.”
“You guys saved me from drugs and Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself and this early journey out of recovery.”
“I don’t have a joke for that. I’m really grateful to you, buddy,” he added.
Munn later confirmed the news after showing off her baby bump in her Instagram stories.
Later in the month, Munn opened up to People about her pregnancy.
“My mom crochets and knits a lot of stuff,” Munn revealed, adding: “She makes little rattles or stuffed animal toys already.”
“This is still a new experience for me so to see my mom excited makes it feel a lot more real! I’m really excited,” she added.
On November 24, 2021, Mulaney and Munn welcomed their first child together, a boy named Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney.
Both Munn and Mulaney posted about the news on their social media channels.
On January 6, 2022, John Mulaney and Anna Marie Tendler finalized their divorce.
In February 2022, Mulaney opened up about parenthood while hosting Saturday Night Live.
“Life is a lot better and happier now,” he said during his opening monologue.
“I have a 12-week-old son. He is a pretty cool guy for someone who can’t vote. His legs are like little calzones, and I want to eat him.”
The family of three has remained relatively out of the public eye for a while, with only the occasional snap on Instagram confirming that they’re still going strong.
On January 9, 2024, over two years since they officially started dating, Mulaney and Munn made their red carpet debut at the Governors Awards in Los Angeles.
The duo also stepped out during the 2024 Oscars and the Vanity Fair 2024 Oscars party on Sunday, March 10, holding hands and striking a pose on the red carpet.
On March 13, 2024, Munn revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023.
In a heartbreaking post on Instagram, Munn revealed that she was “thankful” for her friends and family, including her partner, Mulaney.
“I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” she captioned the post.
“I hope by sharing this it will help others find comfort, inspiration and support on their own journey,” she added.
“I’m so thankful to John for the nights he spent researching what ever operation and medication meant and what side effects and recovery I could expect.
“For being there before I went into each surgery and being there when I woke up, always placing framed photos of our little boy Malcolm so it would be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.”
“Thank you for fighting so hard to be here for us. Malc and I adore you,” John Mulaney commented on the post, alongside a red heart emoji.
In May 2024, Munn revealed to Vogue that she had her eggs frozen after her cancer diagnosis.
Munn revealed that she froze her eggs three times, at ages 33, 39, and 42.
She said, “John and I talked about it a lot and we don’t feel like we’re done growing our family but didn’t know if I would have to do chemotherapy or radiation.”
She chose to have surgery after struggling with negative side effects from the cancer medication she was prescribed.
“It was next-level, debilitating exhaustion. I would wake up in the morning and almost immediately need to get back into bed,” she said.
She continued, “I have now had an oophorectomy and hysterectomy. I took out my uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.”
Has Olivia Munn ever been married?
Olivia Munn isn’t shy when it comes to sharing her thoughts on marriage.
“I never have ever been that girl [who dreamed about her wedding],” Munn revealed in an April 2020 episode of The Big Ticket With Marc Malkin podcast.
“And I’ll hear about friends who have, and I’ve just never been the person that’s, like, ‘Oh, I can’t wait to get married. This is what it’s going to be like, what my ring would be.’ I don’t really have any of those,” she added.
“The idea of getting married has always made me a little…it gives me…I don’t know what that word is for….”
